August 2026 Friendship

The people who stay

A birthday reflection on a friendship that revealed itself during one of life’s hardest chapters and became something closer to brotherhood.

Today is KL’s birthday.

He came into my life during one of the hardest stretches I have ever been through, when my dad was under attack from every direction and it felt as though the ground beneath us was giving way.

KL did not hesitate.

He did everything he could. No questions asked. No calculation about whether the problem was his to carry or what standing beside us might require of him.

I will never forget that.

But what matters most is not simply what he did during that one chapter. It is that he has remained present through every chapter since.

Through my worst days, my messiest moments, and all the times when I know I was not easy to be around, KL never once flinched. He stayed steady when I could not be, stood beside me through uncertainty, and never made me feel that his friendship depended on which version of me showed up.

That is what the truest friends do. They do not only celebrate you when life is easy. They stay when the room empties, when the answers are unclear, and when it would be far simpler to walk away.

Over the years, KL became far more than a friend. He became a brother, a rock, and one of the few people whose presence alone can make a difficult moment feel less impossible.

Some friendships are built through years of easy days and shared celebrations.

Others reveal themselves when the ground gives way.

Happy birthday, KL. Thank you for your friendship, your strength, and, most importantly, for always being there.
